Flying

We did it! The whole Rupnow family has officially made our first trip on an airplane. Now to anyone who travels by airplane on a regular basis this may seem to be a silly task to be excited about, but with only one experienced flyer in the family we are overwhelmingly excited!
Knowing there are millions of horror stories about screaming children on planes certainly did not help out this Mama while preparing for this adventure. I have never Googled so much in my life searching for any hints or tips that could be helpful when flying for the first time with a one year old! (Might I add there is not a whole lot out there!)
Returning from a beautiful family wedding in St. Louis early Sunday evening we began the task of cleaning out the suitcases and packing them up again to fly out the next morning. Whew! Not as simple of a task as one might imagine...who would have known you need so much for three people!
Flying out was interesting. An older gentleman began having health problems on the plane so we were given priority to land. Which in the Atlanta airport, was almost a blessing! Isaac had fallen asleep and slept through the entire landing no problem. We were so thankful as we came down in a hurry!
We had a wonderful visit to Louisiana and were able to see many things. One highlight for Isaac was meeting LSU mascot, Mike The Tiger. He didn't take much notice of him until he rolled over and we got a closer look at him in his immaculate outdoor home on campus (it is not to be called a cage, it was as good if not better than most habitats I've seen for tigers in a zoo!).
On the way home I felt so terrible for a young woman who was traveling alone with her two young girls. First her daughters seat was not near hers so they had to ask a not so pleasant woman to move so they could be together. Then her eight month old was having a rough day with no sleep having started the day too early and not napping. The baby was having nothing to do with a bottle and the mother was trying to do everything she could to keep the already unhappy child calm on a packed flight. An older gentleman seated infront of her couldn't keep his profanity and rude comments to himself and wasn't about to try and hide his displeasure along with a handful of other passangers. To add to the stress when we were about 20 minutes from home the pilot came on to tell us we were turning back around to fly 40 minutes back to Memphis because of a problem with the plane. Upon returning to Memphis we were able to get off the plane (Praise the Lord) and try our best to have encouraging words to those complaining about the small child and offered a lending hand to the struggling mother. Finally we were able to board and head back home. There really is "No Place Like Home"!
